There is a pioneering patient-centred neurorehabilitation service, and the largest specialised neurosurgical-ITU and only Neuro-Medical ITU in the country.

NHNN provides a range of comprehensive cutting-edge clinical services across the entire spectrum of adult neurological, neurosurgical, neuropsychiatric diseases. We operate a national and regional neurological unit, and engage in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. At NHNN there are over linked consultant posts. The NHNN has beds which includes a stroke and brain injury unit and neurorehabilitation centre. We provide comprehensive services in neuropsychiatry, neurocritical care and neurorehabilitation supported by neuroradiology, neurophysiology, neuropsychology.

Neuro-ophthalmology services are also provided, and with the link to Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Royal Free constitute the largest clinical neuro-ophthalmology practice in the UK. We provide a comprehensive service in all aspects of clinical neurosciences this includes the specialist services listed on the side. Anybody with troublesome spasticity. The majority of our inpatients are people who have been reviewed in the outpatient multidisciplinary clinics with problematic spasticity who require admission for trial of intrathecal baclofen or phenol. Patients are admitted to the NRU under the care of the spasticity team.

Trials of intrathecal baclofen proceeding to pump implantation when appropriate. Intrathecal phenol - candidates for intrathecal phenol are admitted to access a trial with local anaesthetic and subsequent intrathecal phenol treatment.

This enables them to gain access to a multidisciplinary review and treatment including Botulinum toxin, Sativex and assessment for intrathecal treatments. Clinical services are provided by Consultant Neurologists, a specialist nurse, and specialist physiotherapists.

How are referrals made? Referrals should be made directly to the Spasticity Team via email SpasticityTeam uclh. This is a weekly clinic to which current inpatients at the NHNN or UCLH hospitals can be referred for assessment of their rehabilitation needs by a multidisciplinary team.

People with a range of neurological problems including stroke, multiple sclerosis, head injury, cerebral palsy, spinal cord lesions, neuropathies and genetic disorders are seen. The patient will be reviewed by the team at their bedside, and a t the end of the review the team will discuss their recommendations with the individual. There are many different possible outcomes to an assessment including the options of outpatient therapy, community rehabilitation team input, inpatient rehabilitation whether at NHNN or recommendations for an inpatient admission at another more appropriate unit.

If it is decided that an admission to the neurorehabilitation unit NRU at NHNN is most appropriate an admission date and information on the NRU will be given to the patient at the clinic. The team consists of a consultant neurologist, specialist registrar in neurology, and clinical specialists in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and rehabilitation nursing.

Referrals should be made by the treating team by completing the referral form, emailing neurorehabilitation uclh. As a tertiary service we offer education and support to physiotherapists on a local and national level, contributing to research and development of guidelines.

The physiotherapy outpatient team at NHNN assesses and treats people with neurological conditions who experience movement difficulties, mobility or balance issues. The physiotherapy Outpatient service offers a specialist service for assessment and advice for ongoing management of neurological conditions:. Who provides the clinical services? As a tertiary service we offer education and support to occupational therapists on a local and national level, contributing to research and development of guidelines. The Occupational Therapy outpatient team at NHNN assesses and treats people with neurological conditions who experience any difficulties performing every day activities such as work, self-care or leisure tasks.

The Occupational Therapy outpatient team consists of clinical specialist and senior occupational therapists, all of who have specialised in neurology. The service is available to patients over 16 years of age who have a NHNN Consultant who have a need for neurological occupational therapy.

A senior speech and language therapist with specialised knowledge in neurology and all aspects of communication and swallowing relating to neurological conditions. The service is available to patients over 16 years of age who have a NHNN Consultantwho have a need for speech and language therapy. We offer advice on the management of patients with neurological upper limb deficits secondary to central nervous system disease.

We are particularly interested to see stroke survivors who might benefit from more intense treatment of upper limb deficits, especially early after stroke. The service is available to all patients over 16 years of age with a confirmed stroke or other central nervous system diagnosis. We are happy to discuss referrals from other sources e. Community Rehabilitation Teams, but the patient's GP should agree with the referral. It is important that GPs are involved in the decision to refer from the outset especially if we decide to proceed to admission.

There are several ongoing studies on the Upper Limb Programme, which patients will have access to where appropriate. This is a specialist vocational rehabilitation service that looks at how your diagnosis impacts on work, and works with you to find solutions to the problems your diagnosis creates at work or study. Once we receive your referral we will contact you by letter or phone to advise you as to our waiting list or to offer you an appointment. We may a sk you to fill out some questionnaires to help us monitor our service.

We will also help you and your employer to identify any reasonable adjustments that may be suitable to enhance your working life. Often we will offer to meet with your employer or come and work with you to solve difficulties. At the end of your planned treatment you will be given a period of time where you can come back and see us in case problems arise open access. A Consultant Neurologist will review the diagnosis and how this impacts on work. A Clinical Psychologist will assess any changes in thinking skills and how this may affect your work performance.

The Clinical Psychologist is also interested in your adjustment to any new challenges and can offer help with coping strategies and mood difficulties related to these challenges. There's also a focus on your identity at work and the factors that may influence your confidence and self-esteem.
