She has been held in juvenile detention for the last nine months after being charged with aggravated murder for the killing of her father, Jonathan Meadows. Her lawyer, Ian Friedman, said in an interview Thursday — a day after a hearing was held in Warren, Ohio, on whether she should be released — that no one should object to her receiving the mental health treatment she needs, given the trauma she had suffered.
HuffPost, whose coverage of Bresha's case helped draw international attention, reported that Stanley Elkins, an assistant county prosecutor, said that Bresha could be a flight risk, and that she was already receiving satisfactory medical treatment while incarcerated.
Friedman said that her older brother and sister, both of whom were at home on the night of the shooting, would be testifying in support of their sister, who he said was acting in self-defense. Some members of Mr. Bresha and her siblings were not physically abused by their father, Latessa says, but she says that Brandi was — in many ways.
She says that for years Brandi kept the abuse a secret, even defending her husband when her family asked questions. They say they have questions about the night he died. According to Latessa, Brandi said her abuse started when she and Jonathan first began dating, when they were teenagers more than 20 years ago. Latessa says Brandi told her that she loved Jonathan and stayed with him despite his abuse and heavy drinking, and eventually the couple had two more children.
She says she had no idea her sister was suffering. The aunt continued on to say that her brother-in-law was very controlling and would not allow her to visit the Meadows home. Bresha was also reported to have ran away from home and came to her house back in May, where she begged Latessa for help.
Latessa then brought the teen to Warren police to talk to an officer, who then aided in her contacting of Trumbull County Department of Job and Family Services, expressing her fear for her mother and her sisters. According to Juvenile prosecutor, Stanley Elkins, Bresha was one of the youngest aggravated murder defendants in Trumbull County and the Warren police are continuing their investigation on the case. Bresha Meadows is due back in court at the end of August.
I started this petition because an act of self-defense is not an act of murder and I believe Bresha Meadows was excercising her right as an American citizen to use the Second Amendment of the United States Constitutional Bill of Rights.
We all, as Americans, are equally and lawfully afforded this right, and I believe it should also apply to self-preservation and the preservation of those who are also in danger from the possible execution of a violent crime, including the threat of domestic abuse and spousal injury.
